Restoration Process

ONE SPLIT SECOND was originally shot on 16mm film in 1995. Unfortunately, the original negatives were accidently destroyed. What has survived is an edited master on SVHS video tape from 1996. Over a 2 year process, the film has been restored as close to the original negatives as possible using modern image processing tools and AI technology.

01.

Digitize SVHS video tape to ProRes 422HQ file.

02.

Separate film into the movie's 482 individual scene files.

03.

Recover true 24 fps of the original film using reverse telecine for each scene.

04.

Paint out dust, scratches & video glitches on over 220,000 frames.

05.

Upscale each scene to high definition using AI.

06.

Use separate frame-by-frame AI process to enhance and  restore faces.

07.

Remove video flicker and noise.

08.

Remove audio noise and enhance dialogue using AI.

09.

Re-edit entire film.

10.

Fix & remove problem elements in scenes such as boom mics & other issues.

11.

Normalize and remix audio.

12.

Generate and time text for close captioning file.

13.

Color grade each of the movie's 482 scenes.

14.

Test render movie and rewatch for quality control. Make necessary changes.

15.

Identify and remove potential image copyright violations in movie.
